ON THE JOB NEWS EYE ON EDUCATION DISCIPLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING JUST HANDED DOWN MISSION CRITICAL SYSTEMS News Harris Receives $7 Million in Orders from the DHS Genetec Unveils Cloud-Based Solutions Harris Corporation received $7 million in orders to deliver public safety and tactical communications systems to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its component agencies, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Coast Guard. The orders were awarded through the five-year, $3 billion DHS Tactical Communications (TacCom) indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract vehicle. Harris will provide the U.S. Coast Guard with Falcon III�� AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack tactical radios that will be installed across the Coast Guard fleet to provide interoperable tactical communications with local, state and federal agencies, as well as the Department of Defense. Separately, Harris also will provide the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) with a standards-based P25 Land Mobile Radio system. The Center, located on Fort McClellan in Ala., is charged with training first responders in recovery tactics for response to critical homeland security situations. Genetec��� unveiled its plans for bringing physical security software to the cloud. In conjunction with a strategic multi-year alliance with Microsoft Corp., Genetec is developing true, reliable, hosted security solutions including Video Surveillance, Access Control and License Plate Recognition (LPR) as a Service that will be built on Microsoft���s Windows Azure cloud-computing platform. The new cloud-based security solutions will combine the strength of Genetec���s unified security platform with the global reach, scalability, and reliability of Windows Azure. Following an aggressive development schedule, Genetec is planning on delivering its first cloud-based service offering in the first half of 2013. Okeechobee, Fla. Agencies Choose Spillman Software Three public safety agencies in Okeechobee County, Fla. will utilize a shared Spillman system. The Okeechobee County Sheriff���s Office and Okeechobee County Fire and Rescue Department are joining the Okeechobee Police Department in using Spillman Technologies��� fully integrated products for their community���s needs. The Okeechobee County Sheriff���s Office chose Spillman���s computer-aided dispatch, records management, jail management, and mobile solutions in an effort to reduce response time for emergencies and increase officer efficiency and safety. The Okeechobee Fire and Rescue Department plans to use Spillman to streamline their dispatch and emergency response. The Okeechobee County Fire and Rescue Department will share the Spillman system hosted by the sheriff���s office, allowing them to exchange data easily and save money by sharing hardware and maintenance costs. The agencies will also use Spillman���s CAD2CAD Interface to exchange call data with Okeechobee City Police Department, which has been using Spillman software for five years. 8 LAW and ORDER I December 2012 PublicEngines������s CityConnect��� Connects Law Enforcement with Communities PublicEngines������s CityConnect��� mobile application is the first fully integrated mobile application that allows agencies to inform, connect and engage with their local community through their own agency-branded mobile application. CityConnect brings together all agency social media tools, plus PublicEngines��� popular services including CrimeReports mapping, TipSoft anonymous tipping, and agency alerts into a single mobile application. It allows the public to stay up-to-date on local crime information and communicate crime information, unsafe conditions, and tips back to law enforcement officials anytime, anywhere. General Motors Extends Impala In early December, General Motors made a major announcement about its police lineup. Dana Hammer, Manager, Law Enforcement Vehicles for GM Fleet & Commercial Sales announced an extension of the current Chevrolet Impala 9C1/9C3. Chevrolet will continue to make the current Impala for the 2014 model year. This will be exclusively for fleets and that specifically includes the police package (9C1) and undercover package (9C3) for law enforcement customers. For the 2014 model year, the current Impala will be sold under the nameplate Impala Limited.
